Data requirements

The diagnostic list for this experiment uses a subset of the standard CMIP5 lists, including the satellite simulators and other diagnostics proposed by the CFMIP project to enable a process orientated evaluation and understanding of the models (see below). As such, modelling groups submitting to CMIP5 should need to do little extra work to set up diagnostics for Transpose-AMIP II. Data should be in CF-compliant netCDF format and passed through CMOR, consistent with CMIP5. PCMDI have agreed to host the data alongside CMIP5 data (similar to how the CFMIP I data was hosted alongside CMIP3). For typical climate model resolutions (1 degree and 40 vertical levels), the data volume per model contributed to transpose-AMIP II is expected to be around 0.4Tb. This is small compared to a typical CMIP5 experiment.

The following CMIP5 diagnostic tables are to be saved as 3-hour time means:

•    Table ‘Amon: 2D’ but excluding tasmin, tasmax, fco2antt, fco2fos, fco2nat.
•    Diagnostics cltisccp, albisccp, pctisccp from table ‘cfDa: 2D’
•    Table ‘cfDa: 3D’ but excluding clcalipso
•    Table ‘cf3hr: CloudSat/CALIPSO/PARASOL simulator output in orbital curtain format’

In addition, CMIP5 diagnostic table ‘cf30min’ (which includes table ‘Amon: 2D’) is to be included. This table specifies diagnostics to be saved approximately half-hourly at particular locations (about 118 stations).
