EN4 quality controlled ocean data: Select version to download

Current version

The current version of the EN4 dataset is EN.4.2.0. This will be updated each month with new data. Profiles and analyses are available with two different time varying bias adjustments applied to mechanical and expendible bathythermograph (MBT and XBT) data. Please contact us if you have a particular requirement that is not met by these data.

Previous versions

EN.4.1.1

EN.4.1.1 is very similar to its successor, EN.4.2.0, but the latter dataset contained a fresh download of all source data in January 2016. EN.4.1.1 had psu as the units of practical salinity which has been changed to be unitless in EN.4.2.0. The uncertainties in temperature analyses for EN.4.1.1had 273.15 added to all values, this has been corrected in EN.4.2.0 and therefore temperature uncertainties can now be read directly from the netCDF files.

Profile data and objective analyses are available:

EN.4.1.0

EN.4.1.0 is identical to its successor, EN.4.1.1, except that all observations in the Black Sea were automatically rejected. This automatic rejection had also been present in the previous versions of the dataset. Following user feedback it was removed and the dataset reprocessed to make EN.4.1.1. Please get in touch if you would like it use this version.

EN.4.0.2

Data with no time varying bias adjustments

Profile data and objective analyses are available:

Data with time varying XBT and MBT bias adjustments

Only profile data are available:

Differences compared to previous versions of the dataset

The main changes compared to the previous version of the dataset (EN4.0.1) are:

Additionally, EN4.0.1 onwards include the following improvements relative to EN3 v2a, which are described in more detail in Good et al. (2013):

Older versions

Two older versions of the EN4 dataset are also available for download:

Citing the data

When using the data set in a paper, please quote the version number (for example EN4.0.2), the date the data were downloaded and cite the following:

If using a version of the data that incorporate time varying bias adjustments please consider citing the relevant paper and please also take note of the data sources used to construct EN4 (described in the paper and available from the download page for each version of the dataset) and acknowledge them appropriately.
